Project: Garden design (private client)
Location: North Ayrshire
This compact Ayrshire garden uses bold angular design to create visual interest and maximise functionality in a small footprint. The unconventional geometry gives this garden a distinctive character that sets it apart from more conventional layouts.
The design pairs contemporary angles with timber sleepers and gravel to create a rustic aesthetic that keeps the garden grounded and unpretentious. This material choice provided excellent value while delivering strong visual impact and textural warmth. Timber slat fencing, matching fence toppers, and a custom gate unify the boundaries with clean modern lines that complement the angular design language. The structural framework creates a cohesive backdrop for the planting to evolve.
As a keen vegetable grower, the clients prioritised productive space - a polytunnel and generous compost bays are integrated as functional features rather than afterthoughts. Flowering trees including crab apple, cherry plum, and hawthorn provide structure, seasonal interest, and wildlife value.
These photos capture the garden immediately post-planting. Once the planting matures and fills in, the space will be transformed - softening the geometric hard landscaping and creating the naturalistic feel the clients envisioned.
