Planting Design
Tom specialises in creating lush, biodiverse, wildlife-friendly planting plans, specifically suited to your garden conditions. Benefitting from a long background as a gardener, working with plants over many years, Tom has learnt which plants provide the best value in a garden environment, and what those plants need to develop and perform to their full potential. Tom also specialised in soft landscape management for his Master of Horticulture award - the highest qualification offered by the Royal Horticultural Society.
Tom’s planting schemes are loose, ecologically-informed designs using herbaceous plants, bulbs, structural shrubs, evergreen plants, trees and ornamental grasses to create striking, biodiversity-friendly compositions with year-round interest. Carefully selected plant combinations ensure that there is never a dull period during the year, with rich foliage textures taking over when flowers are not so abundant. Strategically layered and staggered flowering periods avoid expanses of bare earth over the winter, and welcome spring with early flowering favourites, whilst late-flowering selections ensure a lengthy feeding season for pollinators. Planting schemes can work for people as well as pollinators, all that is required is a well thought out planting plan.
Complete planting design and planting packages are available in Glasgow and across the central belt, and further afield for larger jobs. If you live elsewhere in the UK, Tom can still help, with his online planting plans.
Online planting design services: Detailed, professional planting plans designed remotely for gardens across the UK. Whether you're in Cornwall, Cambridge or Cardiff, you can access the same level of expertise that has created award-winning gardens closer to home.

How does it work?
-
An on-site consultation where a microclimate analysis is undertaken, and a soil sample taken away. Thereafter a soil pH and soil texture test will be done. During the consultation we discuss your hopes and aspirations for the space, and the various options and any practical issues arising are discussed.
For our online planting design service, you will be required to send a soil sample and complete a questionnaire describing your garden conditions.
-
A quotation is provided for the planting design work - the production of highly detailed 2D planting plan(s), which come with an online moodboard showing the plants specified, and maintenance instructions for each plant species.
-
A quote for the supply and installation of your plants is provided. This includes any preparation work and soil remediation that may be required. Irrigation systems and flowerbed edging can also be quoted for at this stage if required.
-
Maintenance instructions are provided with your planting design, though you may also wish to make use of our aftercare service.
-
For jobs local to our base in Glasgow we offer a regular aftercare service, looking after all required pruning, feeding, weeding and cutting back. Alternatively, Tom can offer an ongoing consultancy service to help ensure the planting design stays on track.
