Project: Horticultural Consultancy
Location: Isle of Bute
This stunning coastal property on the Isle of Bute enjoys spectacular views but faces challenging west coast conditions - persistent winds, high rainfall, and salt exposure. The client had spent four years creating an evolving garden driven by passion, but recognized the need for professional guidance to bring cohesion to the disparate plantings.
Working as a horticultural consultant rather than traditional designer, we provide ongoing seasonal guidance to help refine and unify the garden. Rather than imposing a rigid master plan, the consultancy model allows for flexibility and evolution. Through regular seasonal visits, we assess what's working, relocate plants that aren't thriving, and make incremental improvements that respond to how the garden actually performs in this exposed environment.
The result is a garden that feels naturalistic and unforced, while possessing an underlying structure that creates visual flow and wholeness. This project demonstrates the value of ongoing horticultural consultancy for gardeners who want hands-on involvement but benefit from expert guidance on plant selection, placement, and long-term evolution.
Client testimonial:
“Tom’s knowledge of plants and garden design is outstanding. He’s helped me create a more cohesive flow through the garden, tying different areas together. Although there is a plan and structure now it still has the naturalistic feel I love. Tom has a calm, friendly manner and is a joy to work with, always open to my ideas, but equally ready to suggest more practical alternatives”
