Biodiversity Installations

Biodiversity features such as insect hotels, bee posts, sand planters and bird boxes are available for supply and installation in the Glasgow area, and further afield for more extensive projects. Biodiversity features are perfect for achieving biodiversity targets for commercial clients, as well as being valuable additions to any private garden. Research shows that in excess of 50%* of urban green space in Scotland is comprised of private gardens, amenity public spaces and parks. This means that finding the right biodiversity solutions in all these types of green space could not be more vital. Tom is passionate about assisting clients in making sure that they can achieve their biodiversity goals in practical, cosmetically-pleasing and cost-effective ways.

Bee posts - ecologically-informed bee posts built from sustainable/recycled timber that provide habitat for our endangered native, solitary bees. Drilled holes with diameters ranging from 2-10mm accommodate different kinds of bee. The depth of nesting holes is critical, with many bee hotels and posts on the market not providing sufficiently deep holes to ensure an even gender mix of new bees (the eggs for the male bees are always laid first, in the deepest chambers). Similarly, positioning the posts correctly is vital to ensure protection from the elements whilst also ensuring sufficient sunlight.

Sand planters - another installation that caters for the the often-overlooked needs of Scotland's ground-nesting solitary bees, creating perfectly engineered environments that replicate their preferred natural habitats. Each planter features a carefully curated sand and soil mixture to create the perfect mix of sandy conditions with structural integrity within which the bees can build their chambers. Carefully selected planting with species such as Thyme and Marjoram ensure a beautiful cosmetic finish that also provides a nectar source for bees. Correct positioning of these planters is important to ensure optimal solar exposure and protection from prevailing winds, creating microhabitats that can support colonies for decades.

Bird boxes - we install cleverly designed bird boxes that provide maximum protection from predators, including a metal plate on the front to deter woodpeckers, and a clever tunnel system inside that protects young birds from cats and squirrels. Bird boxes are carefully positioned within your garden to ensure protection from the elements.

Interpretive signage - ideal for the likes of communal residents’ gardens, these signs provide vital information to people about biodiversity in your garden or grounds. Signage is often essential to ensure a positive reception from people, and the text can be tailored to your exact requirements, whether that is explaining the presence of dead wood habitats, or identifying creatures that might be spotted in your wildflower meadow.
